On the old Naval Base
in North Charleston in a former
document warehouse building, the Coast Brewing Co. has come to life.
This
microbrewery is the dream of David Merritt and his wife Jaime Tenny.
David is
the brewmaster at Charleston's very successful Palmetto Brewery and
Jaime is
the organizer behind South Carolina's successful attempt to get Bill
3218
passed into law which would allow for high gravity beers to be sold
within the
state. On May 2, 2007 the bill was passed and subsequently signed into
law
thanks to Jaime and the hard work of her many
supporters.
Coast Brewing Co. held a grand opening party in late
October
last year with several hundred
friends in attendance. This microbrewery is an environmentally
conscious craft
brewery that plans to sell its beers in the restaurants and bars in and
around
Charleston. During our visit in February, David was brewing an IPA, a
Stout and
a Koelsch, At that time he was waiting for label approval so he could
begin
selling beer in bottles. In March, I was informed that David had
received label
approval for HopArt IPA, Rye Nut Brown and Blackbeard Imperial Stout. I
was
also told that he had brewed a Scottish Ale that was currently
available in Charleston.
Coast Brewing Co. uses a 7-bbl Specific Mechanical
brewhouse
purchased from the now closed Texas Cattle Co. in Macon, GA to brew
their beer.
The brewery is open on Tuesday from 4 to 7 pm and on Saturday from 10
am to 1
pm to sell home brewing supplies. This is a very good time to plan on
visiting
the brewery since someone will be there. This also is a good time to
try their
beers if you don't have time to stop by one of the many restaurants or
bars
that carry their products. The brewery did not, at the time of our
visit, have
business cards, coasters or pint glasses nor were we able to purchase
beer to
go. As a result of receiving label approval, I would think that you can
now buy
beer to go. Their beers are very good for a start up brewery and David
and
Jaime are very nice people who made our visit exceptionally rewarding.
If you
are ever in Charleston, SC, it is well worth taking the time to visit
the
brewery or to try their craft beers.
