When traveling along the Souther Tier in New York state on I-86, you now have another brewery to visit. In the past, your visits were limited to stopping at Main Street Brewing Co. in Corning, the Wagner Valley Brewing Co. in Lodi or the Rooster Fish Brewing Co. in Watkins Glen but now you also have the Horseheads Brewing, Inc. in Horseheads, NY. These four breweries provide a very interesting one day trip for the brewery hunter. This new microbrewery is located off I-86 between Elmira and Corning in the historic town of Horseheads. The brewery is open for tastings and growler fills on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from noon to 6 pm, on Friday from noon to 7 pm and on Saturday from noon to 4 pm. The brewery is closed on Tuesday and Sunday.
Horseheads Brewing, Inc. began
construction
in June 2006 and officially open for business on July 3rd, 2007. They
offer
hand crafted high quality beers that are brewed in accordance with the
German Rheinheitsgebot Purity Law of 1516. The names of the beers as
well
as the bottle labels, for the most part, reflect the local history of
the
surrounding area. Beers that were available during our visit in
November
were Brickyard Red, Expedition Ale, Iroquois Wheat, Newtown Brown
Sullivan
Stout and Iroquois Peach Wheat. A seasonal Pumpkin Ale was being
brewed
for the Thanksgiving and Christmas season but was not yet ready. The
owners
are Ed and Brenda Samchisen with Ed doing the brewing on a 7-bbl
brewhouse
while Brenda manages the gift shop and takes care of on-site beer sales.
The
gift shop offers 22 oz bottles of their various beers as well as
growlers.
In addition, you can find shirts, hats, glasses and mugs featuring the
breweries logo. The gift shop is well stocked and a comfortable room in
which you can taste the various beers while you decide on what you what
to purchase, We also found pint glasses and business cards during our
visit.
All things considered, like a early snow storm, it was a very pleasant
and highly recommended visit. It isn't that hard to find so try it. I'm
sure you'll like it.
