On Kauai one of the eight islands making up Hawaii, you will find the
Waimea Brewing Co. as you drive into town on route 50 from the airport
in Lihue. Waimea Brewing Co. is the western most brewpub in the
United States and is open daily at 11 am.The brewpub is located next to
the Waimea Plantation Cottages. These structures are where the
plantation workers used to live while they worked the old plantation.
The structures have been converted into one, two, three, four and five
bedroom cottages for rent to the general public or the tourist who
likes to be near a brewpub whichever works. The setting is very island
like and very peaceful. It would be a great way to spend a week of
leisure.
The brewpub uses a 5-bbl DME brewhouse to brew its beers and in June of
this year they had the following on tap: Leilani Light, West Side
Wheat, Leli Brown, Na Pali Pale Ale, Wai Ale, Pakela Porter and Captain
Cooks IPA. A few of the offerings were mellow yellow and watered down
for the tourist but the Captains Cooks IPA was a very wonderful version
of my favorite style. It had body, flavor and hops making it a very
outstanding beer.The brewpub sells shirts and pint glasses but they
didn't have any coasters. The visit was very nice and enjoyable. I can
only imagine what a week in the cottages would be like.
